Generative Engine Optimization

Become a Source AI Models Cite, Across Every Answer They Generate

A generative answer pulls from dozens of sources, not one.

Generative engine optimization is the work of making sure your business is reliably one of them, everywhere the topic comes up, not just on the one page you wrote about it.

The Real Job

What Generative Engine Optimization Means

Generative engine optimization, GEO, is the practice of building a business's presence broadly enough that AI models cite it as a source when generating an answer, not once, but reliably, across the different ways a question gets asked.

Where answer engine optimization structures one piece of content to be the exact quote a model picks, GEO builds the wider footprint that gets a business considered as a source in the first place: real mentions across the web, clear entity signals, structured content a model can retrieve and trust.

It's a breadth game, not a precision game.

The Distinction

Three Related Jobs, Not One

AI SEO is the umbrella: getting a business found anywhere across AI-generated answers.

Answer engine optimization is the narrow tactic: structuring one piece of content to be the exact quote a model picks.

Generative engine optimization is the wide tactic: building enough real presence, mentions, and entity clarity that a model treats a business as a trustworthy source across many answers, not just one.

Most businesses need both the narrow and the wide version running together. AEO wins the specific question. GEO makes sure the business is even in the running to begin with.

The Process

How It Works

Step 1

Audit

Before anything gets built, I check where a business already gets mentioned, or doesn't, across the sources AI models pull from: press, roundup articles, forums, and the business's own entity signals across the web.

Most businesses have never checked. The gap between real presence and assumed presence is usually the whole opportunity.

Step 2

Build

Then I build the footprint: getting named in the roundups and lists AI models already treat as trustworthy, cleaning up entity clarity so a business's information is consistent everywhere it appears, and engaging honestly in the communities, Reddit chief among them, that carry real weight with these models.

None of it is content rewritten in isolation. It's presence built across the places these models look.

Step 3

Track and Run

Citations don't show up in Google Search Console. So I track them separately, the same tracker MarketCraft runs monthly against ChatGPT and Perplexity.

I build the system once. It keeps reporting every month after.

The Approach

The Man + Machine Method

Every GEO agency sells you a five-layer framework and a stack of jargon. Frameworks don't earn a mention. Real, specific presence does.

The Man + Machine Method splits the work on purpose.

AI handles the scale: tracking mentions, monitoring citations, flagging where a business's information is inconsistent across the web.

And I handle the judgment: which mentions are worth chasing, which communities are worth engaging honestly, and which entity fixes move the needle instead of just looking thorough on a report.

Every piece of content that ships still passes through a validation system before it goes out, the same one that catches AI's tells before your customers, or a language model, ever sees them.

The Infrastructure Behind the Content

I don't just chase mentions and disappear. I build the systems that keep tracking whether they're working.

That's:

This isn't theoretical. It's what runs my own agency.

One human and a stack of AI operate every page on this site, every email that goes out, and every report a client receives. The tools below are the exact systems doing it.

Who This Works For

I've worked across 30+ sectors in eight years and 300+ engagements. The pattern isn't the industry, it's the business model: online, service-based, or digital-product companies.

A few examples with real proof behind them:

SaaS

NordVPN, PandaDoc, Opus Clip, and Gorgias are among the SaaS teams I've written for, from consumer-facing to enterprise.

Medtech and Healthcare Marketing

Built the content engine behind MarketCraft's 0-to-231 search result run, the clearest proof on this page.

Creator-Led Businesses

Turned existing audiences into recurring revenue and affiliate income without a traditional product or brand behind them.

Still Have Questions?

Frequently Asked Questions

What is generative engine optimization?
The practice of building enough real presence, mentions, and entity clarity that AI models treat a business as a trustworthy source and cite it across the different ways a question gets asked. It's broader and slower-moving than answer engine optimization, which targets one specific quote.
How is GEO different from AEO?
AEO structures a single piece of content to be the exact answer a model picks for one question. GEO builds the wider footprint, mentions, entity signals, community presence, that gets a business considered as a trustworthy source in the first place. Most businesses need both.
How is GEO different from AI SEO generally?
AI SEO is the umbrella term for getting found anywhere across AI-generated answers. GEO is the specific discipline inside that focused on breadth of citation and source trust, as opposed to AEO's focus on winning one exact answer.
Does this include digital PR and getting mentioned in roundups or lists?
Yes. That's a real part of the work, not an add-on. AI models weigh real, earned mentions heavily, and getting named in the lists and roundups they already trust is one of the more direct ways to build citation-worthy presence.
How much does GEO cost?
Across the market, GEO work typically runs a few thousand dollars a month upward, similar in scope to a content or digital PR retainer. There's no set price on this page because scope depends on how much existing presence there is to build from.
How long until I see results?
Longer than AEO, usually. Earned mentions and entity signals compound over months, not weeks, the way the 0-to-231 Google case study built over 14 weeks. What timeline applies gets said honestly before the work starts.
Can you guarantee my business gets cited by AI models?
No, and anyone who guarantees a citation is lying to you. Nobody controls what a model decides to trust and repeat. What's controllable is whether the real-world presence exists for it to find.

See If You Qualify

I work with a small number of clients at a time. It's me and a very small team, and I'd rather deliver excellent results for a few businesses than average results for many. That's also why I don't take endless strategy calls.

So the application asks a few questions first, to see whether we're a fit. If we are, you book a time and we go through your business properly. There's no hard sell on the call, because I've never needed one.

And if I can't help you, I'll point you toward whoever can. Either way, you'll leave with a clearer plan for getting found than you walked in with.
